Looking for historical information

I possess a work of primitive art (Dominican Republic, Cuban or some other Caribbean island) and I am curious to get information relative to any large salamanders that may have or do inhabit these islands. The culture is Carib or Tiano and of old but uncertain age. I have been trying to track this down and hope someone can help me out. It has all the earmarks of the axototl but not the correct wood. Thanks
