I've had my Chinese firebelly for about 6 months now, and three others just like him have come and gone

. I'm thinking about trying again, possibly with a different species? I gather that it's unrecommended to house different species together. But were you to have any suggestions for what other species would be good for this...

None - you might be able to get away with some small uninteresting fish like white cloud minnows or zebra danios. If you want more newts you'll have to get more cynops orientalis.
