"Little" surprise for me.

More like a lightning bolt out of the clear sky. While looking into the C. o tank this morning, I noticed that Matt's female was slimmer than she was yesterday-then, I saw a leaf folded over itself. I thought, thats funny-but looking it over I realized there was an egg! I have now found 11, in various stages of development-a few have a distinct head/body.

I had noticed Matt's males cloaca swelling, and that they were more active and tended to congregate in the back corner, but I didn't see any courtship. Yesterday, I saw one of the females gripping a water lettuce root between her feet and thought"thats odd" but never suspected eggs.

They are in a seperate container. Got microworms and daphnia ready-perfect timing!

Wish me luck!

Hoo Ha, Joseph, way to go!!

Pulled a few more eggs...unsure of if I just missed them or if they were layed yesterday night. Soem of the eggs now have a very distinct head/body. One has little gills and moved when it was disturbed-I suspect that one will hatch soon.

Any keepers of C. o mind filling me in on how long they take to hatch?

The larvae, BTW, look like they will be larger than almost all fish fry I have had experience with. The embryo itself would be considered "x-large" if it was a fish egg

One hatched today! Interesting little bugger-but again much larger than expected.

And the female pumps out more eggs! Don't think I will be raising more than 20 because morph C. o don't seem to be in demand...and it would be a bit difficult to find homes.

Hey Joseph, congratulations!

You might want to put out an ad for the extra eggs. It's always worth shipping eggs to interested people because they're hardy enough to withstand priority mail ($5) and gives a chance for others to try their hand at raising newts (instead of just purchasing them at a pet shop).

Yeah, If your going to only Raise 20 i would definately take 5-6 eggs...Ill PM you later...

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
