This afternoon I divided my main tank again to house some of the larvae (6) as they are getting a little crowded with the 13 together. I checked that they were safely secured from dad, watched them forawhile and then wandered off todo the domestic chores. As i was about to cook tea I noticed Jeffrey was in hunt mode...on closer examination I found that some had squeezed through a gap in the side.I rescued the hunted one and fished out the others and returned them to their original tank. I removed the divider and hucked it..it has been a very poor purchase and will get perspex at the first opportunity.
On closer exaination I found that one of the larvae is missing all its tail...I watched it in his tank and while it was feeding its rear end was floating upwards. I have now placed my first axolotl in the fridge in shallow water, with some sushi worms. I have since looked at it again to assess its chances and despite my initial concerns has eaten and poohed ( thought this injury may have affected its ability to do this.)
The larvae had been approx 2 inches in length, now little over an inch , the tail cut is a little below its back legs ( all complete) and appears clean as opposed to ragged. I appreciate they are pretty good at regenerating body parts but appart from following the steps for fridging, and salt baths IF the wound or the axolittle appears fungassy ..is there any thing else worth doing to help....it seems a lot of axlotl to regrow!
