Does anyone have pictures of developing larvae of Lissotriton vulgaris and Mesotriton alpestris apuanus? I'd like to see images of both larvae from early development stages to see if they can differentiated from each other early on or if they have to have some age on them before the can be distinguished from each other.

You may know this already, but I find the easiest way to tell is the shape and pigmentation of the tail.

T./L. vulgaris larvae have tails that taper gradually to a point; T./M. alpestris larvae have tails with a blunt or rounded end.

T./L. vulgaris larvae have unmarked or weakly marked tails; T./M. alpestris larvae have heavily spotted or marbled tails.

I've never needed to distinguish very young larvae, but I'd guess that it would be difficult to be 100% sure before the back legs appear.

There are some reasonable photos of larvae of both species at http://www.whose-tadpole.de, though not of very young ones, unfortunately.

here are some pics of my apuanus larvae from last year. they are not the best pics but i hope they help

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
