Currently i do not have a hood or light source for my axolotls, besides my dorm light, i would keep it this way but during the summer my ex girlfriend must take them, and she has cats that like to drink and swim in tanks, so i want to get a hood lamp for them, my ex-girlfriend wants to get a black light for the hood. I have looked some stuff up and i have seen that someone said that this is not good, but this is from the same person on all the websites. So is a black light good or bad? and if it is bad what kind of bulb should i get for them?

Lighting is not required for axolotls, lighting is purely for display purposes.

There are some benefits to lighting other than just display. Lighting also allows plants and algae to grow which is very helpful for maintaining good water quality.

Although, as I understand it, black light means ultraviolet light?

The only people I know of who use these have genetically modified axies which glow under UV, and even then they only turn them on rarely.

I'd reccomend ordinary white light.
