Lighting idea

i just wanted to share an idea i used on my axie tank that worked. i had a lamp on top of the tank with a 40watt light bulb in but this was still to bright for my axie. she hates any kind of light. i changed the bulb to a 40watt blue light bulb and now she loves the light on all the time and i can watch her play. i have found also that it doesnt heat the water if you have it on all the time plus it looks really cool.

denise- I agree on the blue light. For summer I was worried about the extra heat their normal light would put out. So I got a moon light. During the day they have it on and a very low watt aquarium lamp.

At night with the moon light on they are very active and it does look cool. Puts out no heat at all.

Watch out with plants though. They need the red and yellow parts of the spectrum most, so this isn't a solution if you have the light for plants (like I do)

I removed all my live plants for summer. If I get a chiller (saving up for one) I will put the lights back on and the plants back in. But I will keep the moonlight it really works well for watching them at night without light bothering them.

i have only got a plastic plant cause i couldnt have any other lighting, even thought she has a pot to hide in any kind of light annoys her except the blue light

Do you have any pictures of it?
What about a black light? That would be really cool, but would it be ok for the axolotls? Especially the white one?

Joseph - there is a picture of a moon light in the gallery under the thread "it is official..."

Blacklights are NOT COOL for animals over the long term. They emit a wavelength of light that will burn their retinas out over time. If you must insist on haveing a blacklight to make your animal glow, only turn it on for a minute or two, and not often.

joseph, i didnt go the black light cause i also got told by pet shops that its bad for their eye sight but a blue bulb in a lamp gives the same affect but without the danger, its not as powerful but still gives the effect im after. ill try and take some pictures soon, im still learning to use my new digi camera

what is a blue light? I need ideas for my tank with light, its under a window will sunlight be to much? Thanks

A blue light is... well, a blue light. You don't need supplimental lighting for your tank unless you plan on having a lot of live plants. Under the window will probably cause sunlight to enter it directly, heating the water and probably causing algae problems. I have mine next to the window, but where direct light never reaches the tank.

Well its pretty cold in my basment so im not all that worried about the sunlight heating it up to much! I will be keeping a close eye on the tempature thou... thanks
