Hi all, I currently hae my axie in a tnak with a built in light. I have read on a number of sites that you do not need lights, but you CAN use them if you have plants and enough hides for your axie, and as long as the bulb is below 40watts..

My bulb is 11watts, and I have a hide for my little axie, I have had it on a few hour son a night and it never seems to bother her, she never hides away, so is it ok for me to leave the light on as long as it's not affecting her?

I prefer the light on (the tank looks better, I cna see her and I have live plants) but I would turn it off if it seemed to bother her, but so far she is walking about and exploring without trying to hide. Is this ok?

Is this a plant-growth bulb ? If not, I would suggest one for the sake of the plants. :)

Screw-in or strip fixture ?

Hi,
Plants need special light to grow well. Aquatic nature has special light bulbs that combine white and red color but they are pretty expensive. Aquael has some 11w bulbs special for plants with 8000k color temperature. If you can't find any you can combine 2 economic light bulbs. One should be 6500k(cold white) and the other 2800k(red). Osram or Phillips brands are best and will last for a long time. I have a 24w neon from osram (code 965) for my 54l aquarium and works great.
Keep in mind that plants need also nutrients along with the light. I recomend easy carbo from easy life, this is also good to keep the algae from growing. Having a planted tank with axolotls is a challenge.
I also recomend that you dont keep the lighs on more than 8 hours a day. My light hood starts at 12 pm, stops at 4 pm for 2 hours, starts back on at 6 pm and stops at 10pm. I found out that this works great for plants. They grow like crazy and stops the algae from developing.
Also try using plants that are cheap and easy to keep.
I'm telling you this from personal experience and in no way I'm an expert in aquatic plants or aquascaping.
