I read to use a screen lid on top of the axolotl tanks as they can jump out , then I read only to put about 6 inches of water in the tanks . If the tanks have only 6 inches of water in them can / will the axolots be able to jump out if there isn't a lid ? Thanks for any replys.

6 inches of water isn't usually enough for axolotls. My tanks have nearly 18 inches of water in them.

Hi.
I started with about 6 inches of water, then as I looked further into this site I ended up filling up to the top. My two do use all their space for lurking in plants , swimming , feeding etc.
With regards to a lid, I made one as I have stinky cats and didn't want to risk the axolotl coming to a sticky end..but mainly if they are startled suddenly ( only seen it once) they do go like the clappers and tend to leap out of the water...which could be life threatening for them. I used a quite fine ( small holed) one rather than solid as I believe they need a good air flow......having said all this one cat has taken to lying on top of this until he is kicked out side. Now have to modify to keep the cat off!

I started of with no lid but my cat kept drinking from it (it was not good for her stomoch trust me!!) also a couple of nights waking up to a flying kitty (so shocked by axie attack whilst drinking) was not good!!! final good reason for a lid I placed my bag on top of the tank and splash in it went ...axies ok but my mobile phone and nintendo ds not so much (it would of been cheaper to get a lid) I have a mesh lid now and it gives me more surface space to put clutter!!!
