So my lfs is getting in a shipment of cfbn today :(, as some of you know, about a month ago i purchased 4 , from which 2 have survived and are actually thriving :d, im a well aware of the horrible conditions the newts are exposed to during being caught and shipped, and i really hate the fact that the market does not take the animals into consideration or the damage caused to wild populations . However , knowing that the store will still aquire them regardless of the prementioned , i cant sit by and let my consciousness know that some of theses little guys wont make it or go to some owner who doesnt know what they are doing and will meet an untimely end. I want to save 2 today if possible, i have my 20 gallon long which is comming along great and houses 2 cfbn and a nerite snail & lots of live plants, i do routine water changes and keep a eye on quality, when i do go and pick the little guys out i will be sure to pick the healthiest ones possible, i will inspect for skin disease or wounds, activeness etc. I think picking them up asap ( 5 hrs within being recieved in the pet store ) will highly raise the chances for survival and will lower futher risks. I do have one question, is it neccessary to isolate the new newts before introducing them to the cureent 20 gallon long set up ? Thanks in advance !

First off, if you do get any more, keep them in a separate tank, so there is no risk of any almost inevitable diseases arriving on your own newts, and second, why don't you just tell the guy about where the suppliers get the newts from and have them look on here or other places for CB ones? Show him pictures of the end results (Bloat, "The Shine" ect, ect, ect.) and at least if he does nothing he'll have that on his conscience

You must quarantine the new newts. The possibility of transmission of disease is very real. I personally used a small enclosure, called a Lee's Firebelly Landing. It's very easy to change the water and monitor the new animals eating, pooping and health. Six weeks in the hole, if they are healthy, then they get paroled.

Hi!
Could you still consider not buying them? If somebody always buys them for whatever reasons the seller thinks they are worth keeping offered and takes more and more in. It was a good idea to show him where they come and which conditions. Still one thing I'm worried; what if they are another species and you notice it only after shopping. Now that you have those two doing well, these new ones can make a health risk.

Thanks everyone for the replies ! I haven't told the owner of this website just because it has never crossed my mind, and as I seem to understand CB CFBN are very rare to find CB. Also to be quite frank , I don't think he will care anyway. I just hate to know that the little guys are suffering, I will attempt to educate the LFS owner as to the appropriate keeping of the CFBN. I think I am still going to take a visit down today, I cant really ignore knowing that they are getting a fresh shipment and I can possibly aid, the shop doesn't always carry them so its more of a special item they have at times , that's why I want to save a few, I still have a 10 gallon in that I can quarantine the newts to, where I kept the previous 2, if they look healthy ie: no visible sores, active, good weight , is it still absolutely necessary to quarantine ? I don't think putting them in the 10 gallon will be the best as the 20 long is established and will provide the best conditions for them to recuperate fast. Lots of live plants, filter with minimal current, air stone, great water quality, sand etc.

I can see why you'd want to 'rescue' them from the pet store, I've been tempted myself before, but as Auli has said, it just makes way for more to come in to replace them. I also agree that just because they are described as Chinese firebellies its by no means guaranteed that's what will turn up, there are a few Chinese species that end up in the pet trade and all have been described by wholesalers as firebellies.
At the end of the day its your call, but if you decide to go ahead and buy more it really is vital to quarantine them. Imported firebellies are notorious for carrying all kinds of diseases, often without showing obvious symptoms until a few weeks down the line by which time the two you have now could also be doomed as well.

Buying wc phibs justs continues wc, you will be funding and helping to perpetuate this process.
The reason why cb cfbn are not commercially available is because the wc ones are too cheap to compete against. Its not worth raising this species for profit at a wholesale level, the cb ones you see available were raised for fun.

So I didn't get the CFBN, can anyone direct me to someone who may breed CB CFBN ?

You made the right choice. :)
I know its sad to think of the newts suffering, but for every tank full you see in a shop, there are many more that die in transit before they even make it into petstores.
It would be a good idea to post a wanted add in the trade section, captive bred babies do come up for sale from time to time as well as long term captive adult newts that people can no longer care for. The other thing is post up some pictures of the two you have, if you have a male and female it won't be long before they start breeding if the conditions are right, you'll be knee deep in baby firebellies before you know it!

Ok I will post an add up ! I will also put up some pictures of the 2 I have so you guys can help me determine sexes, I believe I have a female and male but am not 100% sure because Im not experienced in this species. Have any of you heard of site such as backwaterreptiles.com etc ? Do you guys know if those are wc or cb ?

Any newts from there (Except maybe Triturus, but I still question where they would get them from) will be guaranteed to be WC, except for Axolotls and Ribbed newts. Also, they have a very bad rep in the industry, almost anything that they sell is really sick and weak

Definitely wild caught. That place doesn't have a good reputation for amphibians.

Finding CB will take some patience. And once you find them, they will be juvies that will need to be raised separately from your adults for a while. If you are able to branch out into multiple tanks, you might want to consider other species that are more readily CB.
