can you tell i dont handle these often? all of them from the photos smelled of poison when done with the shots, which is very odd for jap fire bellies

Yes, the smell can be quite sharp, especially with freshly caught ones! Seems to me to be worse with C. ensicauda. But the worst I've ever smelled was with some suspect P. deloustali I had several years ago.
