First i have to qualify that i am so new to this whole hobby and to this site that it is likely offensive, i say almost jokingly. I just now realized how to post a thread, actually.

How does one go about finding if it is legally kosher to acquire specific species of caudata in your state? Specifically for me I need to know what is available for me to have in Texas sans any breeder permits, especially if marbled and blue sotted salamanders are allowed. I have found one Texas breeder selling them, but have heard from one member it was illegal for me to even have such in my home without a breeders license.

Can anyone give me some insight here?

First off, welcome to the forum and the hobby! The best way to go about it is to contact someone in your states local DNR office, which in your case would be Texas Parks and Wildlife. With a quick search of their site it seems non-native salamanders are legal to purchase but there are a few species of native species that are illegal to sell, one of them being the marbled salamander.

"The white list - the species in §65.331(d) - is the list of nongame species that it is lawful to collect and use for commercial purposes (buy, sell, barter, trade, etc.). Species listed in §65.331(e) cannot be collected or possessed for commercial purposes."

The species in §65.331(d).

The species in §65.331(e).
