I returned from abroad yesterday and so have started cleaning my tanks today. In an empty tank I was going to move some newts too, I have found what I assume is a leech.
I thought it was half an earthworm at first, but as far as I know, cut earthworms don't suction to the glass at one end!
I assume due to its size (over an inch) that it may have come with a bunch of plants I brought several weeks ago before I went away.

Now what should I do? I have removed the leech, but I don't know if there are others. I would assume my newts would eat any others, but I do not know whether they could cause damage internally or externally. Has anyone experienced leeches before?

Thanks in advance. (also sorry for the quality of images)

It´s only a problem depending on the species. There are some species that are no threat to caudates, while others like Hirudo medicinalis can kill a newt. Sadly, identifying a particular species is not always easy.
I would check the tank thoroughly and pick up any that you see. Perhaps wait a bit more until you use the tank for caudates to make sure.

I cant find any more, but I shall wait a while before putting anything else in the tank. Thanks for the reply.
