OK thanks for that guys, i have two more questions so here they go....

Referring to my 2 Axis in my 1st post , I have noticed the older they have gotten the less active the have become, for example they no longer swim along the tank they just seem to walk along the floor. I have tried to feed them less , I now only feed them every 2 days with approx 5 garden worms chopped in half. They have now become not very interested in the worms and never swim to the top of the tank to take the worm out of my fingers ( although I have put this down to me dropping the worms into the tank when I am in a hurry) .

My next question ,

I have a third axolotl which is in a separate tank as it is only a juvenile and is only around 13cm long, I am wondering when I should put it in the tank with the other 2 and how should I do it, should I do it gradually , putting it in for 30 mins then take it out and put back into its tank? or should I wait until its the same size as the others.

thank you

Chloe

When axolotls are adults they tend to be lazy. All my 3 girls only walk in the water and like to hide, were my boy frecks and lottle all ways swim round like mad at night and relax in the day. i wouldnt worrie about it, it is normal behaviour for this sort of animal.

Secondly if you want to put your juvi in with the adults use a devider you can buy them in many pet stores this is what i do with my axis untill they get the same size because if you put the juvi in with the big one it may get bitten and bullied. Most deviders are see through so this will get the axis used to each other before taking the divider out.

I have a similar problem as you regarding adding a juvenile to my adults tank. I have patiently waited for close to a year for one to reach a good size , he was in a divided section of the tank. Having really looked at them both the adult is 34cm and the first juvenile 28...but bulk wise he is about half his size bulk wise.
Due to the hot spell we have just had a second juvenile ( Rogue) needed to be brought in from an outside tank, initially I would have said he was half the size of the first juvenile...so the question here was who would be safest with who!!
I decided that Rogue would be best of with the first juvenile ( Bruce) and when I put him in, he is approx 1/3 of his size. I have added lots of plants and a couple more hides. Bruce lurks at the bottom and Rogue hides in the plants near the top. I am also very conscious of making sure that Bruce is well fed, and fed first away from Rogue. So far Rogue has all his body parts!!
