Hi everyone I am a first time axolotl owner and i'm getting two 6+ week old leucistic larvae tomorrow but the only food I have right now are freeze dried blood worms and I have just heard that freeze dried isn't a good food for them and I'm worried they will starve to death:( is there any other food I can feed them in case they don't eat the dried blood worms? btw this is just until I can get hold of a different suitable food for them (my local pet store doesn't stock frozen bloodworm, live daphnia or brineshrimp:uhoh:) thanks everyone

It should be okay for a week or two. The best foods to give them as a staple diet are either earthworms or axolotl pellets.

But other temporary foods include crickets, raw prawn, beef heart, (they'll eat most raw meats if you cut it small) and feeder fish, but none of these foods should be given as a part of their full-time diet except as snacks or treats.

Do you have a maidenhead aquatics near you? They sell frozen bloodworm, live daphnia and live bloodworm. Delivery day is usually Thursday, so should have a good supply to stock up on :)
Could you ask whoever you are getting the axies from if they have a spare pack of bloodworm you can buy from them until you find suitable food?
Not sure that freeze dried bloodworm has any nutritional value to it, and may be rather difficult to feed them.

What do axolotl pellets have in them? Are they basically the same as carp or other fish pellets?

thanks guys found a place near where I live that stocks live bloodworms:) I fed one to the bigger baby and it's still moving about in its stomach...is this normal?

omg I just realised you're getting larvae not juviniles! ignore my advice! pellets will be too big and they probably won't eat them.

You'll want brine shrimp, daphania or bloodworms.

Oh and I'm not sure about the ingredients of the pellets, I use Blue Planet and they have different pellets for carp and catfish and stuff, although other users on here use the sinking catfish ones.

I used to order live bloodworm and live daphnia off ebay. If the pet stores dont stock live food, you can always get them off ebay and live daphnia/bloodworm would be best for them at the age they are now. Brine shrimp are only really nutritional for the first 1 or two weeks :)

If you can find a pond, take a fine net with you and sweep it gently through the water, you should be able to catch all sorts of small watery insects like daphnia and mosquito larvae.

As for the worm still moving in your axies tummy, i guess it would for a little while, as it hasnt been killed yet. But if its still wriggling hours later/coming out alive i would chop up the worm before you feed them as i cant imagine its good to have the food coming out the other end live :/
