Hey guys,
Anyone familiar with floating larvae? I've attached a picture, in which two of my larvae can be seen floating. I've noticed they have small yet visible air bubbles in their stomachs.
I'd been reading through some existing threads and found this one:
http://www.caudata.org/forum/showthread.php?t=58931&highlight=floating+bubble
...in which it is mentioned that larvae can develop bubbles after not eating for long periods of time. This doesn't seem to make sense, given than it occurred after I fed my larvae, and that they've had no gaps in their feeding; but it's as close to an explanation as I've came.
Has anyone got any ideas?
Thanks guys,
Karl

Crisis has been averted. The larvae are back on the bottom of their tub and swimming as normal.
Excuse my momentary panic :p
Perhaps it was just trapped gas? Hah.

Completely understandable. I've had a couple that caused me alarm as well, though I'm now thinking the drama was largely in my own head! I had one smaller larva that seemed dead until I tried to fish it out - I asked if it was a "spinner" perhaps, but no one responded. And, Newty (our original C. Orientalis larva) was what I could have sworn was belly up amongst floating plants as I distinctly recall seeing his fire-bellied underside. I quarantined both (happened at different times) for a few days, but with no further odd behavior, put them back with their siblings. As of now, there are no issues - all are still pre-morph.

Good luck,
Dana

Mine floated too when they were larvae (and they ate each day a lot), but after several hours they were perfectly again. It happened 4 or 5 times.

I decreased water level to help them to be in a good position, attached to fern or touching the tank bottom. Now they both are terrestrial and fine, so... maybe this is normal during developing.

Cheers guys. Although nothing untoward happened, it's good to know other people have observed similar behaviour, without any casualties, before.
By the time I'd decided to put the animals into a tub with a lower water level, they were behaving almost as normal again, which was a relief.
I wonder if this is brought about in some individuals as a result of development; who knows? Haha.
