I'm new to all this and am told that the tank I got for my young (and very beautiful) axolotl is too small for him. I need to get a bigger one. I've been to pet shops but they mainly have ones that are quite deep for their footprint. I understand that my axolotl will be happiest in something that has a substantial base area, but doesn't need to be too high. Is that correct?

Anyway, please do you know a good tank supplier in North or central London?

One other thing, I've been looking on-line about making your own. I mean it can't be that hard to fix five pieces of glass together. Or maybe it is... I'd be most grateful for any advice. I am 100% dedicated to being a responsible herpist!

Cheers,
Richard

Hi Richard.Ebay always has superb deals,I know a guy who brought a 50 gallon tank for 99p:eek: true story. If you want to make your own than you can probably find somewhere to get the parts from but I would advise against it,unless you are experienced at DIY and know exactly what you're doing the tank may prove unreliable in the long term.

Good luck with finding a tank:D

Thanks Chris. I'll have a punt on eBay.

Heh Richard,

Ebay, freecycle or preloved!!! Good luck you have such a lucky axie

I was recently looking for a tank for my newts and I couldn't find anything with more floor space and less depth. I got an old tank from someone which is long rather than deep but annoyingly nobody seems to sell anything like that now. I got a Fluval Roma 200l in the end.

Apart from the above mentioned sources, have a look at Clearseal tanks - they come in a good selection of sizes. http://www.onlineaquariumstore.com/acatalog/copy_of_Clearseal_Aquariums.html
Regarding making your own, that's probably not a great idea with a large tank, and it might not even be cheaper because you'd need quite thick glass and lots of it.
If you buy a complete set with a lid make sure it's something you'll be able to adjust to provide ventilation.

To find some local shops, have a look in yellow pages and here: Directory | Practical Fishkeeping

Thanks Eva. That's really useful. I'm not going to make one: like you say, it doesn't work out any cheaper.

I love my new axolotl so much and I am SO getting another. What capacity tank would be good for a pair please?

Clearseal tanks are quite a good size and they are very reasonable.

I bought one second hand 10 years ago and it's still going strong. The only "tank maintenance" we've done is to strip the sealant on the inside as it was wearing away and replace it with new sealant and the tank looks brand new. We only did the sealant last year as well.

Hi Richard,

I would personally say a 3ft tank as I always find no matter how big a tank I get I always want more room for my axies! I have 3 in a 4ft at the moment and am now tempted to go 5 ft lo!
