Keepin' it cool

It has been a full time job keeping the temperature decent so far this summer. After a lot of work and experimentation, I have ben making my own icepacks with sandwich bags. However, even when I double bag them up they still manage to get holes everywhere... Either from the newts or the firmness of the ice. I tried plastic soda or water bottles too, but the bast thing is the bag kind, espeically this soft medical icepack we have. The newts love it and lounge around on it. But I can't seem to have enough icepacks/bags. Anyone have any tricks that work well for your Tarichas?

I had about 6 water bottles that I used when cooling my tank. Changing it quite often.

what about using the bottled water you get from the store? put a six pack of it in the freezer until they are frozen and use one at a time and just rotate.

The icepacks they sell at stores for coolers work the best keeping the water cooler for longer, they freeze colder then ice. I bought ones in "space age" baggies this last month but I found leaks in both while defrosting them in a sink. They claim to be non-toxic but if I ever use them again, I will put them in freezer bags for added protection. These seem to freeze up faster as well.

Also when using water bottles I used ones WITHOUT Labels. the ones from the super market probably have some kind of adhesive holding on a label and I didn't want to take any risks as to find out if they are toxic or not.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
