well, I haven't noticed any breeding activity the past couple of days, but I have been setting up my new 30 gallon tank. today I transfered a couple of plants from the old tank to the new one and noticed what looks like three eggs on my java fern. I have done an extensive search for more eggs but not found any. I thought these gals laid in the hundreds? could these eggs be a fluke sort of thing? I am going to take the java fern out and wait to see what happens.

They do lay eggs in the hundreds, not necessarily all at once though. Are you sure they are newt eggs? Has there been any major changes in their environment?

yeah, I am sure. Four have hatched already. I also have gotten about 40 more eggs since the first ones. Definitely karelinii, not many are developing though. Probably because they are first year newts.

Being 1st year animals, sometimes they are not quite as productive. Figure in too, they have the genetic issue, that cuts out productivity by 50 percent, even in mature animals, another reason why they produce hundreds of eggs
