I'm back! Last night one of my females began laying eggs! I know this isn't exactly the right time of year, but I just got these from another lady. She'd been keeping them in a chest chiller @ 65F. My tank here is usually around 70F. I'm trying to keep the tempereature lower for them, because she told me to keep it @ 65F but i can't get it that low yet. So, thinking it is warming up and Spring the males started wagging their striped tails and the females responded!

I woke up to the folded leaves. I'm not sure how to add a photo but I'll try. I have removed the folded leaves containing the eggs. They are in a tupperware being kept at 70F right now. Should I remove the eggs from the leaves or just let them develop in their photosynthetic envelopes? I just read and re-read the How To article on raising newts from eggs.

I'm very excited but need to know if I'm doing this correctly. I feel like a goof for setting off their mating temperature bell. Can't be helped now. Thanks in advance for the help!!

Leave em in the leaves...also get them out of the tank like you did as they will eat them. Congratulations! Based on other peoples experiences prepare for more!

Lovely photos, as always, Jean-Pierre.

Congratulations, Jazz. Yes, you could be in for a lot more eggs. I had 3 adult females and counted their eggs for one season. The 3 of them produced 1126 eggs during 6 months time. You might need this article

Hey,

Yes they do have more plants to lay on. The day before the first eggs were laid I bought Elodea bunches just for that purpose. Of course, the laid on every plant but the Elodea.... *sigh* . Yesterday they started using the Elodea though. lol. I very well may need to make plastic strips. By the way, would anyone like some eggs? They aren't laying more than 20 a day total yet... and I have no idea if they're warming up or slowing down. According to all accounts I've read I have a lot to come.

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
