Hi everyone, just wanted to show some pictures of my new axolotl "family". My husband and I are very much enamored with them :). They are in little plastic containers right now. They come to the surface like that when we are in the room because they expect food. Maya is the leucistic one and Ginger is the golden albino. The wild types have not been named, suggestions for names are MOST welcome!!!

Wow I love their beautiful gills. Name suggestions I could think of are 'Forest 'for the greenish axie because I think the gills are like a little forest and 'Flame' for the golden as the gills are like flames.

The golden one has been named, but I like the name Forrest for the green wild type very much! Good one Becky! Thanks :D

Congratulations on the new members of your family! They are just beautiful. How long/old are they? They look very young. I have axolotl larvae that I'm rearing at the moment, I can sit and watch them for hours! Though I do have to tear myself away to make food sometimes! ;-)

Little beauties, they look so innocent.

How about Nougat for the wild type with maroon gills? ;)

Oh, they are so little and sweet! I just absolutely love Maya's unusual gills - the top gill where it kinda branches out into 2 gills.

Thank you Kerry! They are pretty young, about 9 weeks I think (3-4 inches long). Maybe they are not quite juveniles yet? Congrats on your larvae as well. They are addictive aren't they?

For some reason I want to call the leucistic 'Noodle'.

Haha, I think Noodle is quite appropriate for the way he/she looks. Though my husband has taken to name him/her after the program he uses for work "Maya" :p

Thanks Jacq~ Nougat is a nice name, very cute! I'll add it to my list. I love how your axolotls get along so well in your main tank. I hope that these guys dont cause any problems for each other when they grow up.

Thanks for the nice words Kira, its the peculiarities that make them special eh?

Very nice photos - the gills on the albino are phenomenal. Are you sure that second wild-type is in fact a wild-type? It looks suspiciously melanoid to my eye. To check, shine a torch (flashlight) at its eye and see if there is a reflective ring around the edge (you can see this quite easily in the albino photo on this thread). Shine it at the others too and you will see they have it. If there is no ring then it's a melanoid.

Hi John, very good eyes!! Yes the second "wild type" is a melanoid. For some reason I thought melanoids were a type of wild type. Thanks for clarifying that and excuse my mistake. Also thanks for your nice comments

What you feeding them on?

What you feeding them on?

Live blackworms and frozen bloodworms. I haven't found a fish store that sells these sinking salmon pellets that I've been reading about (and I dont want to order a 50 pound bag), but I'm keen to get them started on those when I do track them down in manageable quantities. But they love their little worms so I'll probably keep feeding those until grow up a bit more, when they can eat bigger worms like earthworms.

Your axolotls look stunning- those are really great photos. You are doing an excellent job raising them- you and your husband certainly should keep up the good work!

Nathan, thank you, your comment has made me so happy because we are constantly worried that we're not doing the right things. Good that caudata is here otherwise we'd be lost. They're worth all the trouble though, cute little things!

Hi Tran,

You might have better luck at a feed store, you know, for livestock. You can also look around online.

How big are your axolotls? They look tiny - and are indeed stunningly beautiful. Love the plum gills on the melanoid.

Those are so awesome I cant wait to get some of my own axolotls.

Hi Eva, thanks for the heads up! You're right they are available online. After you said that, I found another thread on this forum that lead me to the U of Kentucky's website. I didn't read the webpage thoroughly enough last time I was there and thought only educators or biological researchers can order anything. But it turns out ordinary people may order supplies. Hooray!

Those are so awesome I cant wait to get some of my own axolotls.

Thank you kindly. I would encourage you to do it, they are great company and such unique creatures! The people who breed axolotls to sell on this forum advertise them on the "for sale" section and deliver very beautiful healthy animals.

Update: the nameless guys have now officially been named. I named the wild type "Forrest" (thanks Becky!) and hubby has claimed the melanoid for his own and named him "Jester" (like a court jester, with the funny hat)

Cheers to all who gave their input!

Beautiful Axolotls Tran!

It makes me want to get more.

Im glad to see your little guys are doing great, they hatched 2 weeks before thanksgiving.
