Hello,

My Axie has just laid eggs! This is my first time so this forum has been more than helpful. At the moment I have moved some of the eggs into the esky into the lounge room as my house if VERY cold and the heater is in the lounge. The water temp is 11 degrees C, will they still hatch? I woke this morning and found Lupe (female axie) was still laying.. when does this stop?

Thanks so much, hope someone can help me!

Vanessa

Axolotls can lay between 50 and 1000 eggs in a go. This can be as often as once every two months or more.

At that temperature, the eggs will take some time to hatch, but will hatch (think of their natural habitat).

If you don't want to raise the rest of the eggs, just leave them in the tank for the parents to dispose of themselves.

If you leave a breeding male and female together, they will probably continue to breed and lay eggs, which can stress the female. If they continue to breed, I suggest getting a tank separator as a method of axolotl birth control.

Ours laid eggs over 1.5 days, some can do it over a few days.

see: http://www.axolotl.org/rearing.htm

They will still hatch, they'll just take alot longer to hatch. Ours took about 3-4 weeks to hatch as the weather was cooling, a friend's took just over 5 weeks as he had much lower temps, if the temperature is much warmer closer to early 20s then they can hatch within the week or 2.

Once they hatch, it will take a day or two before they need live food. If you weren't prepared, then it'd be a good idea to get a container of baby brineshrimp eggs to hatch and setup a hatchery.

see: http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/microfoods.shtml

Or if you can find a source of live daphnia.

As this is probably your first time with eggs, I'm assuming!, then I would say at most raise only 20 of the eggs and either sell/give the rest away if you're unable to cull them. They take a lot of time and effort, regular (sometimes daily waterchanges if they're in unfiltered tubs) and constant live food.

I have 3 axie larvae left out of 20 I raised.

Good luck and keep us posted!

First time!

Yes this is our first time and it was very unexpected.

I am a little worried as now I have taken the plants out of the tank as they had eggs on them and she has no where to lay more eggs! So I am going to get her some more plants now.

I woke up yesterday morning 6am 15-6-07 and she had laid a heap, then this morning I woke at 9am 16-6-07 and she has laid more.... is this normal? or should I seperate the male and female nfor her to stop?

Thanks
Vanessa

Yes that's normal, some lay in one complete sitting, others will do it over a few days! It's not a problem if you just leave the remaining eggs in the tank, both parents will find/eat the eggs. Sounds cruel, but saves you having to remove and try and raise them. I did leave some eggs in the tank but the majority, less the 20 I kept, went to a local breeder as he was more equipped and had the experience and patience to raise however many he wanted.

Our eggs ended up on every single decoration/cave including filter. I removed the decos/filter and was able to scrape the egg gel bit with my nail so it came of the decos and put into some of the tankwater for the first day.

Hey Kapo

Thanks for your help, I was pretty worried when I sore her still laying this morning. She seems to have stopped now, we just got home from buying some more plants and a air stone and pump for the eggs. The rest of the eggs if there are any more will be staying in the tank. I already have too many and will have to either put them back or see if the person I got my axies from would like them.

The eggs were everywhere, because there were no plants or anything today she was laying them on the filter intake pipe!

Thanks again, I hope I am doing the right thing!
