ok...im planning on changing my axies substrate to sand once i get my new tank (hopefully in august some time) and ive been looking for sand. i looked in pets at home and they have what says gravel but it looks like large pieces of sand.is this ok to use in my axie tank or could this get stuck inside them?

Thanks in advance.

Claire, it seems axies suck some amount of sand while they eat as well. But since the sand isnt too thick they just spit it out or dont consume much. You would rather get a finer grade of sand the tahiti moon sand is nice in my opinion.

Thanks Dev. I do hand feed my axies so swallowing the sand wouldn't really be much of a problem. but ill probably get the finer sand just in case something bad does happen.

Here's my question about sand. How much sand do I need to cover the bottom of a 40long tank? (That's 48x12 inches, I think).

Joan, I have a 20 gallon tank, and I have to buy a large bag I believe it was a 20 pound bag of sand, and it covers the bottom of my tank very nicely, so since you have a 40 long... maybe 3 bags of sand? If you would like just plain sand, Home Depot has 50 pound bags of sand for only around $4, but if you want to go with the black sand, Pet's mart if you live near one has it usually in big bags, and bigalsonline.com also has it. I paid $20 for one bag of black moon sand, which is too much, but I really was desperate to get my new tank set up with fresh clean sand and get rid of that worm problom I had, which is gone now thank goodness. I would think that you would need three bags of 20 pound sand, the sand I have just covers the bottom, enough that I can stick some plants or what ever I want in it, and it's a 20 gallon tall. Hey, I saw blue sand at Pet's mart. I wonder if the blue dye the company uses to dye the sand that color will come off in the water? I hope this helps Joan

Thats a 4 foot tank isn't it, Joan? I bought 20 kg of sand and that covered my 4 ft tank nicely. Sorry, not sure about the pounds/kilo conversion.

Its cool, I can figure it out.

Thanks you guys.

I think I'm going to go with 'natural' colored sand. I've tried to stick to a natural theme, and since right now I have all wildtype (and one melanoid), Black sand would make it impossible to find them. lol.

Hey Joan, try Home Depot. you will get a good deal with the natural sand! i think you would only have to buy one bag, as it is 50 pounds of sand, and it's about $4 here. You can find it in the cement department in Home Depot. It comes in fine grain sand, and also play sand, which I got. It's pre-washed and sifted, so when you wash it, it doesn't cloud the water too badly when you first put it in the tank with water, and it's very beatuful. I loved having it, i miss it, but I had to get it out because of the worm problem, but I didn't throw it away, I washed it in scholding hot water over and over and over, and let it out in the sun to dry, and after a week or so I put it in My gecko's tank, and it still looks great. I hope this helps

Sounds great. I'll probably wait until I move, as this would be the easiest time to change substrate. I'll have to take the rocks out anyway. It'd be impossible for me to move a 40 lb tank with 40 lbs of rocks in it by myself, lol.

The only proble I can see is the sand looking dirty. Maybe I'll try for like, a darker natural color. Like a dark tan. But I think in the end it'll be easier to keep clean, as everything just sits on top of the sand, instead of falling between the rocks.

Sounds good

Home depot might have some other sand too, I know they have all sorts of really nice things to work with. When I had the tan sand, It looked so nice against the light because each little grain of sand sticks out, there is a mixture of different sorts, like black and gray, and red and white. It's really pretty.

Does anyone know a place online that I can order some of this sand? Preferably in Australia? lol

Also does anyone know about the crushed marbel? Is it the same as sand?

hello, i have had a 40x20x 20 tank about 14L with one axolotl in it, is this bad, i have heard some comments and it seems that this is too small for my axel, Bristle.

Hi Claire

I know this is an old thread, but I just read it.

I went to Pets At Home looking for sand and found that "gravel" stuff you're talking about.

I asked all of their staff and though it was obviously they didn't know what on earth I was talking about (A fish with legs?!? nah! Don't be daft!!) they told me it wouldn't be suitable and actually recommended I went somewhere else and got proper sand.

They said it would be too rough for their skin to keep walking across.

I stay well away from Pets At Home. They know nothing about bird or fish care, let alone axolotls.

If you have any wilkinsons stores in your part of the country, you can buy bags of silver sand for £1.00 which work perfectly in either axie or newt set ups.

Hi Morg

I've had sand now for about a month - had to go to a little private aquarium place called The HollyBush as I agree with Laura, Pets At Home don't have a clue!
