Hey everyone,

Today I took my axolotl Jonesy, aka Scuttle Bug, to the vet. Nothing was actually wrong with him but he'd always had this odd looking mouth, constantly looking like he's smiling, that I wanted checking over. So after hearing about an axolotl vet nearby, me, Jonesy, and Arbie (Arbie has a little tummy bug but will be fine *touch wood*) headed off as soon as we could.

It turns out it thankfully is nothing to worry about. Whilst growing his lower jaw didn't quite develop right, meaning it was pushed back a little causing a tissue substance to form, or bunch up, in the middle, so when he eats (or gets excited on Scuttle Bug adventures!) it moves up and down in his mouth a bit.

I'll try take a better photo at some point so you can see the bulge in his mouth more clearly. But I took that at dinner time (hence the mess:p) because that's when it can be more noticeable!

I just thought I'd share it with you as another solved axolotl oddity mystery!

Edit: I was actually supposed to put this in Free For All, sorry if it's in the wrong place now!

That's really interesting - I'm glad it's nothing serious. Makes him look so cute!

And he has the same smile as your avatar ^_^

Glad its just him being unique :)

yeah! You should get him a sombrero! :D

Could you tell us who your vet was, might be useful for someone else.

The vet I went to is in Shifnal, Shropshire and called Taylor & Marshall. It's the same vets Crysta recently took Moomin too. Maybe we could put together a map where vets can be pinpointed so people can see where they can get their axolotls seen?

It was my first time visiting him but like Crysta said he asked all the questions you expect to be asked, even checking that Arbie was on sand so no risk of gravel impaction!

I never noticed that my avatar looks like Jonesy lol. That's brilliant! If I ever got him a sombrero it would soon be off with him on his nightly tank bounds! Well either that or one of the other ones would eat it. =P

Nahhh, bit of elastic under the chin and he'd be right ;)

I think this would be a good idea :) I don't know of anywhere I could take my Axies if they got poorly
