So I picked up my copy of Reptiles Magazine this month, and noticed an Axolotl on the cover.
This was my reaction. --> :D
I read through the article and found out that it was written by our very own John Clare.
This was my reaction. --> :hat:

I think it's so cool that you wrote that article John, and I'm giving a copy to my Mento (the little girl I'm mentoring in her Axolotl project.) I was wondering who chose the photographs though. Two of the pictures show an Axolotl on gravel, despite the fact that you said in the article that gravel was a poor choice.
Other than that, the article was wonderful, with wonderful pictures! I love the cover Axie. I showed it to my guys and I tried to convince them it was them. I think I fooled Marshall. Maynard, on the other hand...

Thanks for making my evening! :)

I have a subscription to that magazine, I don't remember this. What was the month of the magazine?

That issue doesn't go on sale until November 16th, so you must have a subscription if you've already got it. The photos are just photos. Unfortunately they didn't listen to me about the captions and they've labelled 2 tiger salamander larva photos as axolotls, including the main pull out (which doesn't look very good compared to the original photo, in my opinion).

witch magazine is this ?

It's American and called Reptiles Magazine.

Mine just arrived TODAY. Wow, MarshallsMom, you sure get your mail fast!

I saw they screwed up right away. Then I looked at who wrote the article. I was the magazine really screwed up and John must be besides himself. To have the wrong picture on the pullout is a huge screw up. Just another reason that magazine is terrible.

I wouldn't mind but I was asked to review the captions for the photos and I told them specifically that those were tiger larvae just there for comparison since I mention tigers in the article. I'm not pleased about that. Kind of ruins the thing for me. Having said that, I think the article is very good - it was written from scratch (deliberately), and takes into account a lot of what we've learned over the years regarding husbandry.

Wow...I just looked on line to see if I could view the article....and there is an advert featuring the January issue, mentioning our John. :D
Unfortunately they do show the tiger larvae in the sequence. Have you contacted the editor so that they can add a correction to their next issue?

I actually bought mine at my local pet shop, I don't have a subscription. And I have to say, as much as I enjoyed your article John, I would be extremely hesitant to subscribe to a magazine that doesn't fact check. If I can get reliable information for free online, why pay for misleading info?

Somebody called me to ask if I had any axolotls like the one in John's article for sale. They wanted the axolotl that looks like a tiger salamander. They never saw an axolotl like that before. In a twisted way it is kind of funny. Knowing John he was certain to make sure everything was labeled properly. Some editor screwed up and it makes it look like just another inaccurate axolotl article.

I just got the magazine today. I'm going to read it on the road to Lexington Kentucky tonight.

I FINALLY got my copy today - I do subscribe...:(

John, the article is well-written and hopefully, all in all it will provide some valuable information to those out there who have not been fortunate enough to discover this website. Perhaps a few will read the fine print and come join us out here...;)

It is unfortunate about the photos, but still nice to see some focus put on these amazing creatures. I do hope the editors correct the errors, however, some damage has already been done as indicated by Michael.

This is a magazine that usually only has an occasional blip about an amphibian - commonly a (dart) frog. So nice to see a caudate on the cover with more than a single paragraph dedicated to it.

I also wondered about this as there are a lot of people who look through at pictures and don't actually read, they might think it is OK to keep them on gravel.

This made my day. I'm sorry I didn't take into account that magazine readers may not be able to read.... Seriously? Come on ;).

"Able" and "willing" are two entirely different things, and yes, there are people who will just look at the pictures. Don't you think it's a little bit contradicting to say that gravel is bad and have pictures of them on pea gravel?

That's no different than me chain smoking in front of a building and telling everyone who passes not to smoke because it's bad, even though they can see me clearly enjoying a cigarette....come on.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
