JFB Newt Water

I just inherited an adult japaneese fire belly newt. friend is moving so i was given him and a 10 gallon tank. I bought a filter for it and a rock cave. What water should be going into this tank? friend had it in Spring Water. that is currently what is in the tank. is this tank big enough, and how big should land area be. His old tank was compeltely aquatic save for some floating lily pad, but he seems to be trying to climb walls. Other than this, hes swimming around, doesnt seemed distressed. His old owner had a paddle tail newt in with him that was smaller than him, but i said i dont think thats a good idea. If i get paddletail, i wont keep him with the JFB newt. well, long post, hope u guys can help!!

The setup sounds fine, minus the paddletail. If it has been in spring water, I would start out with spring water, then gradually change it to treated/aged tap water (do the usual weekly partial water changes with it). I don't know of any reason to keep up with the trouble and expense of spring water, unless your tap water is really bad.

Have you moved the tank from the friend's house yet? If not, I'd suggest keeping the gravel or ornaments wet and uncleaned until the tank is set up again (thus preserving some of the biofiltration).

i kept gravel and ornaments the way they were, the newt seems calm. Spends a lot of time on bottom, briefly tried to climb walls in the corner. I have a Penguin waterfall filter. i put 3 ghost shrimp in the tank, but he used the bathroom today, i guess hes eaten recently. Any suggestions on feeding? my friend gave me some pellet food. I read that this usually isnt the best. My beta fishes flake food contains bloodworms, is that ok?

How did you seal up the space around the waterfall filter? The newt will climb out if you give it even the smallest crack. Also, be sure that most of tank has no water current, as this can stress a JFB (it could be the reason for the climbing). If it eats pellets, that's fine. If it's thin, you might want to give it something better, like worms or frozen bloodworms. Good luck, JFB are great pets!

im taking a tank lid down to the FSU workshop and cutting it so theres just enough space for the filter. Ill make it as seal proof as possible. so far he cant get a grip on the walls at all, but i wont take any chances.

well, the newt ate for the first time, so the suspense is over. he destroyed a worm. should i just give him worms, or mix it up? he wouldnt touch the pellets or dried bloodworms.

the water from the filter is falling like 2 inches into tank, disturbing water a littl, what can i do other than raising water to top of the tank?

My guys like frozen bloodworms. And while the little guy might -seem- like a climbing retard, he can definitely climb. I found this out the hard way.

You could put a stone that sticks out of the water under the filter, this should break up some of the current. I feed my Chinese Firebellys live blackworms and they love them. I get them at petworld.
