Japanese fire belly mouth rot.

I have a japanese fire belly newt that looks like he has mouth rot but im not entirely sure. im trying to see if its just damage from the gravel in my tank from his feedings or actual mouth rot. im putting him in a separate tank from my other newts to see if the gravel is the actual problem. any other suggestions on how i could figure this out?
