You would think because I live in canada, it wouldnt be 83 DEGREES INSIDE MY HOME! My air conditioner has crapped out on me again....
I a recieving y two taricha granuloso's today, and am paranoid about the temperature...
If you are reading this post, and have taricha Gs, what is the temperature you keep your tank at? And what is to warm? How would you make water temp cooler if it is too much? Ive read people use ice packs? Wouldnt the little newts freeze? Is this safe?
They come home today, I am so excited! The tank looks great, I working on getting some pictures.

Hi Kara
I have use frozen water bottles to lower the water temperature many times with out any problem! If you have a tank thermometer you will be able to monitor how low the temperature gets!
I do not believe you have to worry about your little newts freezing!

Good luck!

I use frozen plastic water bottles and they work well. You should have a rotating supply though; I have 3 bottles (probably 16 oz or so) so after one thaws out in the tank, I can put a different one in and re-freeze the first. I've found that each bottle can lower the water's temperature by 2 - 4 degrees (Fahrenheit). I also have 2 gallons of water in the refrigerator, so I can do a partial water change and use the cold water in the fridge. This time of year is very challenging!! Even WITH my AC on high, my apartment's temperature doesn't go below 70 degrees!

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
