I've had a difficult time finding sands that dont mess with the ph. I bought petcos brand, here's a link to it Petco Black Aquarium Sand at PETCO

Does it look fine enough and safe for any size axie? Mine is only about 5 inches currently.

I looked at that at my petco and I didn't think it was really a sand it seemed more like gravel to me which is a big no no. Petsmart has a good black sand it's more expensive but very nice.

My advice: Skip the substrate all together. You will have less trouble in the long run and a "bare bottom" wil;l keep you honest in your tank maintenance. "Bare" does not mean blank though....you can paint the exterior bottom black, or place a cool printed picture of substrate underneath. Trust me, your axolotl doesn't care as long as the water is kept cool and he gets fed properly. Substrates may look pretty, but I feel that often they are more trouble than they are worth.

I don't believe sand is that much of a hassle. All you need to do is rinse it and put it in. All the waste will stay on top of it so you just have to suck it up off the top.

ive noticed my axie does not like a bare bottom tank, made it akward for him to walk around, I have a tank with half sand and half bare bottom and he stays in the sand. fwiw
