Is this substrate small enough?

As per the title could anyone tell me if my substrate is OK? At my local pet shop / aquatic specialists they said this should be OK. They class it as sand but it's not as fine as one might imagine sand is.

I've read various guides but I'd sleep better knowing if someone here could tell me.

Probably safest to switch to fine sand or no substrate. You can use children's play box sand available at hardware stores.. Just be sure to wash the sand well and soft out any bits of gravel before adding it.

It would be best not to feed the axolotls directly on the substrate as this will increase the likelihood of them consuming the substrate. Feed by hand or use a feeding dish instead.

Okay thank you. I started to feed them directly now but some of the bits float away... I think I will swap to sand - I want to ensure that best!

Also, if anyone can tell from that photo are the gills in the stressed position?

I'm worried I've done something wrong and they are getting stressed or ill

No they don't look stressed at all .
