My neighbors are having work done on their house and there is a giant bag of sand being used (I don't know for what). The sand looks and feels like beach sand; it is soft and doesn't smell like it has any kinds of chemicals. Obviously I would wash it before using it in my tank, but does this look like good substrate? Thanks

It might be ok, but I don't think I would risk it. Depending on where its from, building sand can be very dirty and almost impossible to get clean. I always use kids play sand, I know its safe, its always very clean to start off with and is not overly expensive. By the time you've done washing the building sand, you'll wish you went for the play sand that just needs a quick rinse before its ready for use.

As in play sand for a children's sandbox? Where do you think I could get that? Or what kind of store (hardware, garden, etc)

Yes, that's the stuff. Over here I get mine from garden centres, DIY Chain stores or even supermarkets, so you should be able to find it. They do sell it in toy shop type places, but its normally more expensive there.

Home Depot should carry it, and other hardware stores as well
