Is this salamander legal?

Since you are in Australia, there are no salamanders (except axolotls) that are legal to keep there. In the US, it's legal to keep P. ruber, although they may be protected in some states.

Yes i do know that it is not legal to keep but family was concidering moving there. Also what is the smooth newt legal to keep?

Legal to keep in what country/state? It really depends.

Pseudotriton ruber is common enough here in the southern Appalachians that its easier to observe them in the wild rather than capture them. In my experience they're picky eaters, though I've seen 'em in zoo displays. They must know something I don't.

They're uncommon in the pet trade here.

To where are you moving?

My family has decided not to move to america due to the cost and the fact that we would never get used to the currency.

Hi John,

In my experience P. ruber is not finicky at all... Just shy.

I agree with Ed. I had one in captivity for several years. I got it to eat whole earth worms from my hands.

Aha. I'd been doing the "remove the uneaten live food after a few minutes" routine. Released them after a couple days of this.

Thanks for the input.
