Just a quick question i have a axie baby that has a curve spine. Attached is a picture of my baby.
He has been like that for a couple weeks now. He is developing/eating/pooping like all the rest but this is definately not normal!

Is he going to just keep getting worst as he grows? Should i just see how things go? I dont want to euthanize another baby :( expecially this one who i feel is doing great(thus far) but what kind of future will this little guy have? If he has a future that future will be with me because i wont rehome him but i just want to know his odds

Edit! I dont know why pictures upload like that but you can invision it right side up!

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm a "let it fight it out" type of person. If it's eating well, pooping, etc., I say give the wee one a fighting chance.
It's not like you're going to breed it, so I'd let it have it's shot at life.

That was my plan :) he will be my cute little reject. He has lived 5weeks so far. Everything else is fine with him. .

I agree with karipatra, let it have a chance. Deformation is not uncommon, I have a baby, nearly a juvie at this point who has grown strangely. His back legs are further back than normal and appear to be more on his tail. Life doesn't seem to come easy for the little guy, but i feel obligated to at least give him the chance to make it. I advise you do the same with yours, who knows he/she may live a comfortable life. The only time I'd say to intervene is if it becomes apparent that the little guy is in misery, and that life is a terrible burden. I had to do this with a fish who developed a tumor that was the size of the rest of his body. He could barely swim toward the end of it. So use your best judgement, from the sounds of it I'd say let the bugger continue the fight to live.

Yes :) i gave my other guy quite the fighting chance probably more then i should of but it took me a long tome to get the guts to euthanize him. He had fluid buildup in his abdomen that got so bad he couldnt swim anymore. The little bit he did it was just in circles. He had stopped eating for about 5 days before i decided. But he was only about 15days old at this point. I really dont know how he was alive still but it broke my heart to pieces.

This guy seems really healthy till you look ar him from the side.
Has anybody seen something like this?

I'd give him a chance, it sounds like he is eating and pooping well and growing, if he's got no distressing behaviour or suffering he could grow into a beauty.

I think an inspiration (and totally unrelated to Axxies) if Rudrum could win the Grand National with a deformed spine I'd give this little swimmer a chance xxx

Good luck, I know everyone would love an update on your cutie taddy.

I had a little hatchling that also had a kink in his tail like that, as well as neck (Crowbar). He was eating fine, swimming fine with the occasional turn, but then he started building up fluid. This is a known genetic problem, and I've had several other hatchlings with it. If your hatchling starts filling up with fluid, it'll likely stop eating, as Crowbar did. He ended up passing away overnight, but I felt bad because I should have euthanized him earlier because he hadn't eaten for quite some time. I tried popping some of the fluid-filled axie hatchlings (with a pin) however that didn't work - they would fill up with fluid again (again, this is a genetic problem).

I think the kindest thing for these hatchlings that fill with fluid is to euthanize them, at least when they stop eating or having any other difficulty. As for your current hatching, giving him/her a fighting chance is nice, just be prepared to do what you must in case they take a turn downhill. I'm not sure if the genes for filling with fluid are linked to kinks in the vertebral column as I only had the 1 hatchling with a kink in its body, but just be aware that it could happen.

Well i had that problem with the fluid buildup already and once he stopped eating i did euthanize him. It was very hard but so was watching him suffer. This guy seems like the bill of health. He has been like this for 2weeks now and is doing very well. However i know what needs to be done if he does go downhill. But the other guy was still little. This guy is growing like the rest. 5weeks old.

If fluid starts to buildup then i will know but until then i think he is a fighter. Maybe he will live for a couple of years. Hey even a year would be great! He will be my little reject until then

Our little guy Krumm has a corkscrew tail who we were unsure if he would make it and he is going strong with no issues he just swims a little funny.

Little guys with curved spine will often live. Sometimes stunted growth though.
And dependent on body curvature will have a shorter lifespan.

He definately doesnt show signs of stunted growth(as of yet) he is not the biggest but there are quite a few that are growing slower.

Im happy people think he has a chance. I am attached to it now he is just so weird!
We are ending up keeping 8 axolotls :s hopefully eventually i wi convince my boyfriend we dont need 10axolotls. Hehe sighh.. I am the one stuck taking care of all of them!

I just wanted one of each color type! Lol

I just wanted one of each color type! Lol

Gotta catch em all ;)

If your going to keep him then go for it. If your raising and breeding he would be in the cull bucket as he would be taking up valuable real estate that could be used for other specimens.

Personally I would keep him. I had a group of 4 angelfish from a breeder and one should of been a cull. He was half the size of the others but perfectly formed and 3 months later is growing but very slowly. He has become the Mrs's favourite. Although he/she will never be a breeder.

Nope! I dont plan on breeding any of mine. At least for a few years. Unless an oopsie occurs lol! But i will be making sure this guy never breeds if he makes it that old.

I agree with the general consensus, give it a chance to survive. I had some deformed axies in my last set of eggs I raised, and those didn't survive. But I made the most of their short lives and fed them as much dafnia as they would eat :( Plus, you never know. I had a young axie who I didn't separate from her brother fast enough. Her brother ate all four of her legs, and she didn't eat for a while. I thought she'd die, but I couldn't euthanize her. Now she's a beautiful, full grown, four legged, breeding momma.

Im happy to be able to keep updating on its status :) over 6weeks old and happy and growing with a full belly. Really other then its tail it is just like the rest! It is about 2" now :)

I have an axie that has bloat. Been like this for almost two weeks. I always thought ones that develop bloat often die pretty quickly? As long as they are eating i dont consider euthanizing so this guy is still eating/pooping. nothing unusual other then him bloatin up like a balloon. His swimming isnt effected yet.

I just re-homed my first 16babies tonight :( it was hard to watch them go. I feel so weird looking and only seeing 14 of them. The other 6 are leaving tomorow. The last 8 stay with us until they are older and we figure out if they will be able to go to new home. Only the healthiest ones Are going to new homes.
