sure looks like a cave sally to me..

I wish I knew, but you have a very cute little guy there! You might want to consider entering your picture in the calendar contest. You have taken very good pictures and the picture quality is great!

Best of luck,
Critter Mom

It looks like it's a cave salamander, Eurycea lucifuga.

Eurycea lucifuga for sure. It lacks the herringbone pattern on the tail that is characteristic of Eurycea longicauda.

He's just so small it makes me wonder, but I guess his color will come in a little better. I also thought that since there weren't any spots on top of his tail that he might not be a cave. They just look so much alike. Thanks for the feedback. I was calling him a cave salamander, so I'll do so with confidence now thanks to you. By the way, it turns out he loves termites.

Given the time of year, he probably still has a bit of growing to do.

I had one that was every bit of eight inches, but he somehow made a great escape out of my tank. So, I put a towel between the lid and the tank. I have this guy in one of those "repteriums" with the doors on the front that open. It's the largest one you can buy, so it's kind of overkill for a 3 inch salamander, but it was only $50 and some elbow grease. How fast do these guys grow anyway?
