over the last few days ive noticed my female axie has been getting very fat and is doing the equivelant o a pregnant waddle pacing back and forth along the front of the tank. am i right in assuming that shes full of eggs? why is she pacing?

also

the glands on the male are looking quite swollen does this mean hes hopinor a bit of action too? if this is the case how long until i should expect to see eggs or the spermy cone things?

Hi Megan,

A sexually matured female axie will tend to have a swollen abdominal region due to presence of eggs. Obesity can also result in a similar appearance. Compare the width of the axie's midsection with the width of the head. They should approximate. Look at the throat and forelimb region, do they look fat as well? Male axies will have the cloacal bulge upon reaching sexual maturity.

1 - Establish that your axies are sexually matured. Look at their toe tips. Dark coloured axies will have white toe tips whereas light coloured axies will have dark toe tips.

2 - Confirm that you have a male and female pair.

3 - Check the tank and nutritional conditions. Are the water parameters, temperature, nutrition well met? An increased activity can also mean something amiss in the tank. You want to ensure everything is in good condition.

4 - If you have a healthy breeding pair, breeding stimulus can occur due to a reduction in temperature, photoperiod (amount of light exposure).

5 - If you do not want axies to breed, i suggest keeping them in separate tanks or use a tank divider (not foolproof).

Cheers.
