So I know axies only need enough water to cover themselves (min 15cm), and it's the tank footprint that's important..

I found a second hand tank on Gumtree that is 4ft long x 1.5ft wide but only 1ft high, for only $50 AUD! It had previously been used for axies.. My question is.. is this OKAY for axies? It still has a footprint of 6 square feet which is quite big.. do you think the reduced height will have any negative impact on my guys? I don't want to cause them any unnecessary stress.

Also, I'm after peoples opinion on the visual aspect.. I don't want to rush into anything as I did that with my 3ft just 2 months ago and now see myself again doing an upgrade.. The stand and hood will be only 30cm apart.. I can't help but think that is going to look funny... :S

Opinions, ideas, suggestions??
Thanks.

In my opinion this type of setup is ideal for Axolotls. The reduced height is beneficial when feeding/cleaning, and like you said, it's the footprint of the tank that is important. I would snatch that tank up in a second!

as a guide it only really needs to be as deep as the axolotl is long, so 12inches is fine, axies as you should know spend majority of there time waddling around at the bottom, a higher tank just might look pretty but your axies wont necessarily use all the height like a fish would.

Another thing to think about is the lid, would it be covering part of the side of the tank like a tub lid? Or would it stand on top? also why not just use a condensation tray?

Its all to preference, you might prefer taller tanks. I have a 18inch tall tank, because it was the cheapest one at the time. I am about to buy another tank but this time only 12inch tall for £8.00

BUY IT! It's a fantastic deal.

Personally I find the tanks that are only 12 inches deep a little aesthetically displeasing unless they are on a stand that raises them to about chest level (eye level is better) but then it needs to be on a solid cupboard rather than just a stand or it just looks like a pimple on a pumpkin but that's just me. I prefer at least 1.5 high on a normal height stand but that of course is just what pleases my eye. I don't even like the look of the 1ft high display tanks some stores have for their live rock/plants they just don't look right to me.
It's all well and good for the axie to only need 12 inches but it's us humans that have to look at the tank from the outside every day and if it looks funny to us then we won't be happy with it if you know what I mean.

You could always go and have a look at it and see how you feel about the size of it.

I am going to be on the look out for a "shallow tank" in the near future when my axies mature and don't swim about as much. My tank is pretty deep at the moment and they love swimming around so I felt the deep water was a good thing for my youngsters but definitely going to be getting a tank that has more floor space than depth when they are a bit older. Currently persuading my other half for a 4ft or 5ft tank as we will be moving house next year hopefully and I can devote space in there especially for the tank! A 5ft would be super, and only 5 inches shorter than I am :D:D

Aaron, what is a condensation tray? I have a cat/ kitten so I need something strong so that if jumped on, it wont break. I use pine atm and it works a dream :)

buy it before someone else does Aimz.

For $50 you have nothing to lose, if you decide you hate it you can sell it for $100 :)

Bren

PS when you set it up come and get some of my plants, im getting weighed down with green! HAve your guppies bred?

a condensation tray is a plastic tray that sits inside ontop of your tank, (rests on the glass support beams) its rigid plastic and would stop a kitten, however once it turns into a cat you may have a problem,

The tray basicly is there to catch evaporation, The water vapour forms droplets on the tray and drips right back in Instead of having the water evaporate into your room. if you dont have a lid for your tank they come in handy and are kinda cheap about £6.00 for a 3ft x 1ft.

I picked it up this morning! It's cooooooool. Can't wait to set it up tomozz.. Me and 2 of my housemates are doing a big 3 way swap.. 1 is getting his 2 tier 4ft stand delivered tomozz for his turtles, so I'm getting his old stand. Then once I have my 4ft up and running, the other housemate is borrowing my old 3ft set up to get baby axie/s off yellowpebble.. Lol should be a fun day! :)

Bren, The guppies have bred once so far. We have 8 tiny little (less than 1cm) guppy babies, and 1 baby minnow. :D How many are you after? Would love to do a trade soon for some epic live plants! Only got super tall thin val atm and I think that may look a bit funny in my shallow tank....

Aaron, Hey thanks for the info.. yeah he's pretty big now. Classed as kitten coz he's 6months, but he's cat sized.. Think I'll just go for another pine hood. I'm gonna varnish it so it looks epic and matches the stand, and my bed. :D

I actually kinda like the look of a backdrop behind my axie tank. I just bought a nice new metallic blue one for my tank! :)
However, my bf has turtles and I'm sure he would LOVE some moss for a moss wall.. He already has that 'gutter guard' stuff so then we're pretty much set. Woo!

Do you have any plants that are pot-able? I have some cute little terracotta's that I'm dying to use again. I'm happy to give u a buck or 2 if their value is more than the guppies we can provide. :)

I have some wysteria floating around.

Dont worry about $$ we'll work it out
