Is Eco-Complete substrate safe?

Hi Olivia
Never kept axolotls as yet but Eco-complete should be fine as far as the iron content IMO.
I have kept planted tanks and dosed large amounts of iron with no harm to a large variety of tropical fish so see no reason for it to be of harm to axolotls
Unless you intend to do a heavily planted tank why the use of Eco-complete as it is not the cheapest substrate around and i would have thought axolotls and planted plants not the best of mixes?

My concern with that would be, axolotls breathe and absorb heavily through their skins.

I used a box of laterite clay in my tank, its supposed to be high in Iron content and I used enough for a 55 gallon tank in a 40 gallon. I never thought of it being a problem and fortunetly it hasnt been, however mine is mixed in with steermanure compost, peet moss and some garden soil all capped with sand.

I would check with your local aquarium shop that stocks the product, but really I wouldn't think the iron content would harm your axolotyls. Hopefully someone can confirm.
