I didn't think about it till late last night and couldn't find anything online but I the pie pan I have in my tank as my water dish is aluminum... After reading other posts about the sensitivity of their skin I was curious if anyone actually knows if it's harmful?

I went ahead and pulled it out, wasn't worth the worry.

It was probably for the best. People who have brain illnesses (alzheimer's etc) have aluminium deposits on their brain, I'm not saying that a salamander can get alzheimer's but seeing as the would absorb the water through their skin there might be a risk.

Any aluminum leeching into the water would be very bad. Amphibians are very sensitive to heavy metals. Definitely not worth the risk.

You could just use a small plastic tub made for like storing foods as a water dish.

I found a glass pie pan to put in there :) thank you for the replies!
Although they have been hiding ever since I moved them around....

I know you've already resolved the issue and it's a bit older of a post. I think it's a good idea to get the aluminum out anyway. Just to be safe.

It does have a toxicity to plants, and aquatic life, and in mammals causes kidney issues and disruption of the inositol phosphate system and Ca regulation.

Aluminum, cadmium, copper, zinc and iron are all toxic to amphibians.

Better safer than sorry I think. :)
I only use glass pie plates etc.
