Hi there, i was wondering could someone offer me some advice? Like, i've had one fire bellied newt for a couple of months, i've introduced two new newts into the tank as i was advised that newts prefer to live in numbers.
My current newt seems terribly agitated, is there anyway i can improve their conditions before one gets hurt?
Or will it settle down in a day or so ?

Thanks loads, please someone respond on this or my email address.

hi,
It will probably settle down in a day or two. It is probably because they are not used to each other yet. However, if things do not settle down, you may wish to separate them. How big is your tank?

Blackhawk

fire bellied newts are not that hostile towards eachother so they should settle down.Mine bite at eachother when it comes to food but otherwise they live happily.

as i was advised that newts prefer to live in numbers.

Who told you this? Newts are fine as solitary animals and don't have any preference as to having tank mates or not.

Did you quarantine the new newts before introducing them?

I have never heard that newts need to live in number. They should be fine by itself. I guess maybe the pet show want to make more money from you to suggest that??

Fire Belly newts should be safe to live in the same aquarium. I have 30 living in one tank without much problem. However, when they are hungry, they might bite other newts by mistake. Keep them well fed or hand feed them.

Also, you should make sure that you indeed have fire belly newts and not Warty newts. Some pet show mistakenly label Warty newts as Fire Belly. However, Warty newts are bigger and they are territorial.

As stated earlier they should settle down in a day or two but just in case they don't, you could always rearrange the tank and then reintroduce all of them at once. Sometimes an animal will set up their own little "territory". Rearranging the tank will make the current inhabitant think it's a new area.

cynops orientalis are much more happy housed together .. in my experience

all of the other "fire bellied" species are much more aggressive and will go as far as killing each other , especially pachytron ( paddletails) species ! i have a female currenly half way through regenerating a leg!
