Can anyone give me an approximate period of incubation for Japanese fire-bellied newt eggs?
I found these in the tank about a week ago, and suspect them to have been laid at least 10 days ago. Some are clearly developing, with the embryo taking on a cigar-shape. Others are turning a milky-white inside the gel. (not an external mould) Does this mean they are sterile?

Various sources give conflicting information re: cannibalism among newts, so I have taken the precaution of moving the eggs to a separate container.

Good eggs stay clear throughout the development. Throw away any that start to cloud over. If you want to raise newts it is definitely advisable to remove the eggs from the parents' tank as soon as possible. They love eating eggs and even if they manage to hatch, they will eat the larvae.
I think mine took about 2 - 3 weeks from laying to hatching.

Thanks for that Eva.
It looks like the embryo fell out of one of the eggs, and a couple more had gone bad.
Most of the remaining eggs look like the day 6 stage - I guess the early ones failed.
Wish me luck with the rest of the eggs.
