I've been reading a lot of this forum and was wondering about the general opinion about inbreeding axolotls. I've known a few breeders who inbreed, and I've seen some people who buy adults from various other breeders to mix the genetic line.

Is there a large debate about the ethics of inbreeding axolotls? Or is it just considered a norm to inbreed axolotls, due to the limited genetics?

Inbreeding in axolotl has been carried out for as long as they have been in captivity. They appear to suffer few side effects compared to say mammals. If you can avoid it then please do but in some cases it's the only way to bred certain colours/traits. I think the general consensus is that considering how inbred axolotls already are that you are unlikely to encounter a wave of criticism should you wish to do so. It would be best not to do it for many generations though.
