Ill newt died, unusual skin issues

One of my year old karelinii died tonight. Noticed over the past week he's been hanging around the surface of the water but tonight he quickly became lethargic-like. I pulled him from the water and noticed his skin left a sticky, bubbly residue on my fingers and bubbles on his skin. What the heck happened? I have been having problems with brown algae on the plants, gravel and rocks. This tank has been up and running smoothly without any fatalities for well over a year until recently.

Since your tank has been up and running for a year now, you might want to test the nitrate level.

i have some some red-spotted newts and recently had a couple die. Their skin was blotch white and had redness under the armpits?...they appeared okay yesterday.
