Identification of wild-type vs. melanoid

I have a group of axolotls that are wild type, but carry a recessive melanoid gene. Two of them (no longer in my possession) have produced larvae. At what age will it be possible to distinguish between the wild type versus black melanoid offspring?

when most wildtypes are born they normally have a light spotty pattern, ive never seen a baby melanoid but i assume they would be totally black? just a guess...

Baby melanoids look almost identical to baby wildtypes. Around 2 inches, or when you can see the ring around the eyes is when I noticed for both of mine. One's a black melanoid and one's a lighter melanoid. The black melanoid started getting much darker than its siblings around 2 inches too. Other than that, I don't know.
