I'd say leucistic albino.

There don't appear to be any iridiophores present (no shiny ring around the eye?). If this is so, the color of the body and the dark gills would indicate a melanoid to me. :D

I thought melanoid axolotls were dark black (I have some babies like that). I didn't know they could be white. There are definitely no shiny rings around the eyes like my wild types. He is just so different from my others axolotls.

Why, when I click on the image in that album, do I get linked back the home page instead of the enlarged image?

It is a melanoid.

@eric Its not albino (dark eyes) and leucistics are not albino, they are the ones that are white with dark eyes.

@ Mr Brown I have some melanoid albinos (they have no dark pigment, but have no shiney pigments) and some melanoid leucistic.

This one is more pigmented than my melanoid leucistic but less than my actual melanoids. He is an interesting colour. I like it!

I've seen some melanoids start out rather light and then turn darker later. Mine was a light gray (not as light as yours!) and then became darker as he grew. He is a dark gray, not black even now at nearly a year old.

I do hope you plan on keeping this little guy, I'd be curious to see how he turns out. :D

Regarding the link, I would suggest uploading the pics again. I've encountered the same problem with some of mine.

Thanks Mel! he is definitely interesting. He is also half the size of salamanders his own age, which makes him more of a lovable misfit.

I found that my melanoids seemed to be weaker/smaller than my usual ones.

I hope you'll continue to update us with pics of him :D

I think a clownhead. You need to give him a lot of sunlight, not to much so the tank doesn´t get overheated. And then his head wil turn black and the rest of his body wil turn white.

Sander, I've never heard of such a thing! Can you provide more information?

I think he looks melanoid. My male, when he was little, was kind of a light grey/purple color. He was a little darker than yours, but otherwise looked similar. He did darken as he aged. As for the being small, I think that's genetic too. I have an offspring of said male who might be 4 inches long at most, but is at least 2 years old.

Thanks for all of your replies!

He was one of several babies that are all twice his size, including other melanoid babies (all black, no shiny rings on eyes). I will keep you updated if he starts to darken.
