Ideas for Aquatic Newt

i was wondering what type of newt would be able to live in a fully aquatic tank. It will have live plants, rocks, driftwood. would a species of cynops work?

Hi Viv, I'm new to the world of newts so I can't offer you a list of species, but I've recently acquired a Pleurodeles waltl which I have in a planted, fully-aquatic tank, and he seems to love his new home.

The Pleurodeles waltl (ribbed newt) is an excellent suggestion, especially since this species is widely available captive-bred. How about axolotls?

Most of the Cynops would be fully aquatic only if they are full grown adults. And those are almost always going to be wild-caught. Breeders normally sell juveniles, which are largely terrestrial. The one exception is Cynops cyanurus, the blue-tailed fb. These juveniles are aquatic and they'd be another excellent option.

Tylototriton verrucosus, especially the dark variety, are another good aquatic option. But they are not as commonly available.

In addition to the other newts already mentioned most, if not all, of the Triturus species would do well in an aquatic setup.

Cynops chenggongensis and Mesotriton alpestris apuanas (alpine newts) stay pretty aquatic.

Hi, I think it would also depend on what temperature you have in the tank. Some species can tolerate slightly higher temperatures. Cooling a tank is not very simple.

One other point... when you say "fully aquatic", do you really mean fully? All newts need some small area that will allow them to emerge from the water occasionally. If you really mean fully aquatic, like a fish, then you are limited to axolotls and other species with gills in adulthood.
