I did a quick search and didn't come up with an answer I liked, so here is the question:

Is there a minimum water depth for axolotls?

It makes sense that they need room to move around in... but how shallow can you get away with and still keep the axolotl happy? 5"? 10"?

I don't own one yet, but was just curious while I go about planning for one in the future.

Thanks!

A good guide is a min. 15cm/6 inches off the base (so measure from the top of your sand if you chose not to go bare bottom :) ). Axies are happy above that as well, so I've got my tank about 10cm from the top, and it's 45cm high.
And welcome to the addiction!!

Oh! Another thing to consider is that the more water volume you've got, the easier it is to keep your parameters stable :)

Right now mine are in a depth of about 20 inches. Higher volumes of water are more stable as far as temperature and dilution of waste.

Thanks for the information, everyone.

The reason I ask is because I made a custom tank for my goldfish that is really wide, but quite shallow. The maximum depth I can do with it is 9", but it is a 25 gallon tank. Just wanted to make sure I didn't need a greater depth for them than that!

The goldfish have long since grown out of it, but I love the tank, so I wanted something awesome to fill it with

There is also a great guide for an axolotl setup, including water depth, on Axolotl.org. A good guide is double the length of your axolotl, if you own babies or juvenile axolotls then 9 inches will be ok, but as the axolotls grow bigger i would get a bigger tank as they can jump, and as already mentioned, more water is easier to keep a stable environment.

THIS!!

I always keep my tanks as full as possible, as said more stability with water temp and greater dilution. Also i think a tank looks much better with a higher water level

I have been playing around with depth over the last year and I have not found any difference in the axies in 6" depth aquariums or 2.5 ft deep ponds. they all have grown close to the same rate and act alot alike.Except the ones in the ponds are more shy.

Oh and please understand I am a novice in Axies. I have raised goldfish and koi for years. I fell in love with these guys a year ago and I have many now. I just have moved some of the fish and turned some ponds into axie ponds.

Very cool, good info.
