i bought some red spotted salamanders recently but am having some difficulty finding any info on them
the nearest info i can find is the red spotted newt .
have i indeed purchased newts & not salamanders ?

Hi Salad,

Your newts look like Notophthalmus viridescens viridescens. There are 4 subspecies and based on the red dots they are viridesens. I have a group of six and they are a nice newt. Mine eat live blackworms, frozen bloodworms, frozen mysis and live phoenix worms. Please read species info from main site http://www.caudata.org/cc/species/Notophthalmus/N_viridescens.shtml

And just for clarification, all newts ARE salamanders. They all belong to the order Caudata (or Urodeles). Newts are just a specific subset of salamanders.
