I’m interested in getting some more newts, at the minute I have Chinese fire bellied newts.

I’d like something that stays fairly small (CFB size or slightly larger).

I like the look of the rough skinned newt (but from what I have read it grows a bit big for what I can take).

A LFS had alpine newts in (I wouldn’t buy them don’t worry), but I’ve always loved looking at photos of these; but when I saw them “in the flesh” I wasn’t overly impressed.

I also like the look of warty newts (Chinese warty newts; but for some reason I only like the green ones) but I understand these grow fairly big too (can someone confirm this?)

Are there any species that you’d recommend?

Other Cynops, perhaps. C.pyrrhogaster, C.cyanurus and c.ensicauda are all excellent choices that you can find as CB.
Paramesotriton chinensis (the ones that are sometimes greenish) can get quite large in comparisson to C.orientalis. They are also WC, at least the ones in the trade, and have the same problems as other WC pet-shop species.

I.alpestris is a wonderful choice. I can´t imagine why you weren´t that impressed when you saw them in person, hehe (to me they are heartbreakingly beautiful). They make great captives and are very easily available as CB in the UK. They generally stay about the same size as C.orientalis.

I have no idea why I didn't find them so nice; because they look nice (I think it may have been because they were a bit skinny; in a pet shop - which I will NOT be going to ever again). I'll look into the other species :)

EDIT: I also saw a Paramesotriton chinensis in none favourable conditions but I loved it. How big do they get (I have a tank 18" by 10" not sure on the height but it's 12-13" at least)? Are they aquatic species as well?
