Hello all,

I am a newt newbie and I have been looking for a reliable way to cool down my tank. Since there is only about 7 gallons of water in my tank, I thought the Ice Probe would be a good choice.

Anyone have any experience with this unit? Is it durable and reliable? Is there a better alternative on the market? I think I would have to set up a little cooler tank on the back of my unit to employ the ice probe, since my aquarium is glass. Perhaps I could also just place the thing in the tank on a little tripod? Or use PVC or plastic tubing?

Regardless, any insights about this product (and especially how it performs and works in your setup) would be welcome. Thank you!

I've never used one personally, but I've been told that they work well as far as actually cooling the tank. One problem, however, is that condensation on the sides of the tank ruins the view inside and often ruins wooden/iron stands. You'd need to place it in a tray to catch the water on the sides.

I would not recommend the Microchiller. I tried one that I bought from Marine Depot but had no luck with it. Mine was mounted on a 10 gallon glass tank with approximately 6 gallons of water in it. Supposedly, I should have been able to see a 6plus degree temperature drop. Though the chiller element itself seemed to work just fine (it got ice cold), the end result did NOT lower the water temperature AT ALL. Marine Depot was a pleasure to do business with and issued a full refund minus the cost of return shipment.

Save your money for an alternative method. If you decide to try the hard way, I would recommend going with Marine Depot since they will actually give you a prompt refund.
