I was walking along the dirt road I live on today, and I saw what I thought were scraps of paper all along the ditch. Upon closer inspection, I realized they were "ice flower", also know as "frost flowers". Ice flowers are a phenomenon that occurs when water inside plant stems freezes and expands, bursting through the stems' wall, creating long ribbons of ice shooting out in all directions.

awesome! Y' know, although I live in the land of Ice, I've never seen those. Must be something about the way things freeze down there that is different from here. Or, more likely, Alaskan plants are just more frost-adapted and don't get exploding stems :)

These pictures are really beautiful, thank you so much for sharing!

Nature sure is without peer. You can find majesty in the smallest places... Beautiful photos, Thomas. Thanks for sharing them!

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
